Poetry/Prose: Dirty Dancin'

We danced. For months on end. The tango, the waltz, even salsa'd it up Amidst the swirling shadows, intoxicated by tune Daylight? T'was always the dark we craved Grinding against each other - wanting, denying, no sleeping tonight Heavy breaths in sync, bass tempo till light Staring. Breathing the other in.  Intimate, strange. Enveloped, conspiring; tearing the other apart. Remedy to the madness, but poisonous at touch Pure and utter insanity, the reasons to exile. Yet come night fall, we dance it up again. Deeper into the dungeon, velvety curtains drawn apart. Deadly passion, intoxicating yearning. Scratch marks the evidence of struggle. Copulate, then dilacerate. Copulate, then dilacerate. Pure and utter insanity, deeper into the dungeon we go. Nooks and crannies, monsters under the bed. The questions. The shadows. Therein all dwell. The darkness hath come and conspire with it we shall We dance. Over and over again. A mis...

Ethiopian Air: Insights from Above the Clouds

A great thing about traveling is the people you meet. Not just the people you end up sharing a street, apartment, class, work space with, but also the people you share an aisle with on the train or plane. For the most part, I have shared my travel space with nice, interesting people - persons who are either non-hostile or extremely pleasant, with the former occurring just once. On my way back to Ghana for the Christmas holidays - my first in seven years! - I sat next to an elderly Ethiopian man who, for lack of a better description, had eyes that twinkled. He was friendly right from the moment he smiled and asked "19L?" when I tried to put my hand luggage in the overhead cabin. "Yes, that's me," I responded, before heading over to the window seat. He explained that he was trying to find an aisle seat since it's easier to move about considering his age - he seemed to be at least 70 years. I have always preferred the window seats I've typically been as...

Poetry/Prose: No Longer At Ease (WHY NOT?)

"Some [wo]men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not." - Robert Kennedy No longer at ease. With the can nots, the should nots, the do nots, the try nots... I'd rather stick with the why nots. At least those birth  some  answers to this knot-filled life. He can not make it with that idea. It's stupid. Why not? You should not have your natural curls out. Why not? Do not ask so many questions. Why not? Try not to draw attention to yourself. For heaven's sake... WHY Ever Not? They can not be serious, music/art will get them no where. Why not? It's one (wo)man for him(her)self. We should not expect anything from our country. Why not? This is how it's always been done. It's tradition . Do not even think of proposing another way. Why not? Try not to be so ambitious. You are a woman after all. *Blank Stare* WHY EVER Not? ...

The Letter Writing Project- Being "Woman" in 2011: A Plethora of Questions

Dear Sister, Being girl. What does that even mean? Could it be making sure every crease in your shirt is ironed out before making an appearance? Or having to absolutely, without question, know how to cook at least five local dishes by the time you're eighteen? How about not only going to school and making those grades, but also ensuring that your social reputation is in tip-top shape? And no! Don't even think about talking to that boy in public. What about being woman? Does having a university and graduate degree cut it for advancing a few levels up the corporate ladder? How about you keep that gorgeous figure looking tight a decade down the line after you have your twins?  Oh, here's a thought: what about getting hitched before your biological timer runs down? Hey, here's an even better idea - how about doing it all?! These days, I don't even know what being girl or being woman means. I remember the days when the topic on our lips was either "Are you g...
